Developing toilet independence is a major milestone in any child’s life. It draws on a complex blend of sensory, motor, language, cognitive and social skills — and for children with health or developmental challenges, the path is rarely straightforward.
Families often need more than a standard toilet-training approach. They need clinicians who can adapt the process, pull in the right resources, and support them through the detours along the way.
This workshop is designed to help you do exactly that.
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
Across a half-day session, we’ll walk through a comprehensive, systematic approach to teaching toilet skills for children with additional needs. Rather than promoting a single method, the workshop brings together the motor, sensory, behavioural and communication components that clinicians can draw on and tailor to each child and family.
You can expect to:
- Build a broader understanding of the skills underpinning toilet independence
- Explore how to adapt traditional toilet-teaching approaches for children with health or developmental challenges
- Consider the sensory, motor, behavioural and communication factors that influence toileting
- Review practical resources and tools you can use in clinical practice and parent education
- Take part in group discussion and Q&A to work through queries from your own caseload
