The CO-OP Approach
Presenter: Telethon Kids Institute, CliniKids CO-OP Research team –Briohny Dempsey, Clinical Research Assessor; Jess Reynolds, Project Manager and Marie Rodatz, CliniKids Clinical Lead of Occupational Therapy

The Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Approach is a highly individualised client-centred program based on participant goals and uses a problem-solving approach and guided discovery to assist motor skill development. CO-OP encourages children to be involved in their own goal setting and to develop cognitive strategies to help them achieve tasks of everyday living such as handwriting, dressing, cycling or ball skills. The CO-OP Approach was originally developed for children with DCD and has excellent outcomes for this group. The approach has also shown promising outcomes for other children with a range of conditions, including autism. At CliniKids Telethon Kids Institute we are currently recruiting for the CO-OP research project looking at the acceptability, feasibility, and efficacy of CO-OP for children with autism aged 5-10 years. The CliniKids CO-OP research team will be presenting on the background behind the CO-OP approach, current evidence supporting the approach, what the intervention looks like in practice and our current research protocol for the CO-OP study. CliniKids is Telethon Kids Institute’s first team integrating their world class research with a clinical service. At the heart of our innovative model are children with developmental delay and/or autism spectrum disorder and their families.
